Puerto Rican soprano, Yayra Sánchez, brings music to life with a bright and clear tone, effortless coloraturas and high notes and, an engaging performance of beautiful artistry.
Recently relocated to Austin, TX, Yayra is an active performer of concerts and operas, performing both traditional and contemporary works. She works as a self-employed singer, language coach and voice-over artist; and, is also an active writer and translator, and a teacher.
Ms. Sánchez earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Music: Vocal Performance at The Boston Conservatory, as well as her Pi Kappa Lambda honors. Other studies include a Bachelor's Degree in Literature and Languages: Spanish and English at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, in Santurce, Puerto Rico.
Some of her recent engagements included: Susanna, in Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro," with Repertory Opera Company (Pomona, CA); and, covering the title role of Tatiana in "Eugene Onegin," by Tchaikovsky, for Independent Opera Company (Los Angeles, CA). Also, she participated as a soprano soloist with the Nova Vocal Ensemble (LA), for the premiere of "She Speaks" by Alice Dryden and Amy Gordon.
While she enjoys studying and performing traditional works, Yayra is a passionate advocate of the importance of new, contemporary vocal works. Over the years she has dedicated herself to the study and performance of works by living composers. Because of this, she has had the opportunity to premier countless vocal works, from well-established and up-and-coming composers. Some recent premieres include: "In Memoriam: A Three-Movement Song Cycle on 21st-Century American Tragedy," by Amy Gordon, commissioned by the Nova Vocal Ensemble; a set of Jeremy Jenning's songs ("Give Me Hunger," "Lost" and "The Road and the End") written for the soprano to sing at Nova's concert: "In The Aftermath: Reactions to War and Politics;" Dale Trumbore's set "What Only Poetry Can Do" and Amy Gordon's "Along the Bay" at Lauris' List unSUNg Concert Series 2016; and, "Waking Winking Wishes Wail" -also by Gordon- which she premiered during Nova Vocal Ensemble's "A Dream Is a Wish" Recital. She also sang the World Premiere of Dale Trumbore's "Lodestar", a comission piece for SATB Chorus and Soprano Solo, which was written specifically for her to sing. The soprano is currently in conversations with these and other composers, to bring more new music to life.
Yayra has sung in great stages, including the world-renowned Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Ateneu Barcelonès in Barcelona, Spain, and at the Tanglewood Festival in Boston, MA -where she has had the opportunity to sing for Maestro Rafael Frübeck de Burgos-. On top of all, the soprano has experience singing popular music, as well as Puerto Rican traditional music, among other genres, as an outlet for her creativity and further exploration of music. She is a co-founder and co-producer of the children's music project: Canciones, raíces y alas. This project creates family-friendly music, in Spanish. (www.cancionesraicesyalas.com)
